In November, friends of the Woodman Artist Residency Foundation gathered at the Chelsea studio of Betty and George Woodman to celebrate the program’s first full year, a milestone marked by warmth, reflection and appreciation for all who have brought the residency to life.

The evening offered a welcome opportunity to come together in the space where so much of the Woodman’s artistic legacy was formed. Artists who have participated in the residency spoke about their time in Antella, reflecting on the value of uninterrupted time, creative freedom, and the deep sense of connection they felt to the Woodman lineage. The Founder and the director of the Foundation shared their motivations and reasons for creating this thoughtful, carefully curated residency program in Italy. Board members also shared remarks, underscoring WARF’s mission to support contemporary mid-career artists working across disciplines and geographies.

Throughout the evening, speakers returned again and again to the idea that the residency is not just a physical place, but a living network and tradition initiated by Betty and George and carried forward by Charlie and his team. The gathering offered a moment to celebrate the program’s first year and to look eagerly ahead.

WARF is grateful to the artists, board members, and friends who joined us to mark this inaugural year, and to everyone who continues to support the residency’s vision.

George and Betty Woodman, both teachers and artists, understood that the ongoing dialogue of artistic practice across generations would be their true legacy. The Woodman Artist Residency in Tuscany is the realization of that vision.

Charlie Woodman, a lifelong artist raised in this tradition, along with Andrea Torrice Woodman, has brought that vision to life.
Finally, Executive Director Gordon Knox described the program, the unique qualities of the Woodman Artist Residency and the exciting first group of artists selected to spend time in the hills outside Florence over the next few years. “It is an inspiring place for artists of every discipline to focus, work and be inspired.”

As part of this fundraising kickoff, dozens of Betty’s functional ceramics were offered as gifts for donations. A big THANK YOU to everyone who came and contributed.
During the four days of the Spring Group Project, artists and curators shared their practices and participated in an open studio.

In this first season, the program started in Betty Woodman’s ceramic studio, with a focus on ceramics in multiple perspectives. The recently inaugurated kiln became a catalyst for ideas for past and future works.

We also did Bucchero, a ground firing under olive tree prunings, and picking up the works from the hot ground was fun and engaging. Artists presented projects, some related to coloring with glazes, others in the modeling stage.

The Spring Group picked up the baton of George and Betty, who for years animated these hills with their art making, by sharing in the spirit of friendship and artistic curiosity.
