A residency in the hills of Tuscany with a history of creativity

about the Residency

Located in the rural Tuscan region of Italy, the Woodman Artists Residency is in the former home of ceramic artist Betty Woodman and her husband George Woodman, a painter and photographer.

The Woodman Artists Residency seeks to honor the legacy of George and Betty by ensuring their home and studios continue to support artists and be a site for artmaking and creativity.

One to two artists may be in residence at a time, working in either Studio Betty or Studio George.

Studio Betty

This space is a ceramics studio especially equipped for low fire earthenware.

Studio George

This is a more general space suitable for a range of media.

The children of George and Betty Woodman, Francesca and Charles, also lived there and spent  every summer as teenagers in the Tuscan home. Francesca received her first camera as a gift from George while there, and many of her most well-known artworks were created in Italy. Both she and Charles are artists whose vision was strongly shaped by the time they spent in Italy.

Our Setting

The home is situated in rural Italy and surrounded by beautiful vistas. Although the house is located in a fairly isolated rural setting, it is only thirty minutes from downtown Florence.

The house consists of two separate studios, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are communal spaces.

Our Process

Resident artists are proposed by a rotating cast of nominators and then evaluated in a jury process. If selected, artists can visit for three to ten weeks between April 1 and October 31, during a timeslot that works for them in the next three years.

This program is in partnership with the Siena Art Institute, where Residents will be Visiting Artists for a day. They will also participate in an Open Studio for one day at the Residency, and may have an opportunity to exhibit their work in the nearby city of Florence.
