An artist residency in Tuscany with a history of creativity
Message from the Executive Director
Artist residencies are sacred spaces that support the deep digging of the creative process—not the product, but the deep work that happens in the studio. George and Betty Woodman, both teachers and artists, understood that the ongoing dialogue of artistic practice across generations would be their true legacy. The Woodman Artist Residency in Tuscany is the realization of that vision.
Charlie Woodman, a lifelong artist raised in this tradition, along with Andrea Torrice Woodman, have brought that vision to life. Through their investment of time, resources, and care, they have transformed the family’s farmhouse into a place of refuge and inspiration for artists around the world.
The residency, located in Tuscany honors the artistic legacy of Betty, George and Francesca Woodman.
The program offers a beautifully restored two-bedroom home, with two spacious spaces for art making: Studio Betty for ceramics, and Studio George for writers, musicians, and visual artists—all overlooking the Arno Valley. Artists are selected through a rigorous, rotating international nomination and jury process. This year the arts are being challenged with budget cuts on every level.
This residency is a rare and enduring gift—to artists, and to the world they help us see more clearly.
Please consider supporting this legacy with a donation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Gordon Knox

about the Residency
Located in the rural Tuscan region of Italy, the Woodman Artist Residency is in the former home of ceramic artist Betty Woodman and her husband George Woodman, a painter and photographer.
The Woodman Artist Residency honors and extends the legacy of artists Betty and George Woodman by ensuring their home and studios in Tuscany continue to provide artists from diverse backgrounds and cultures with the time and facilities for art making in an inspiring environment.
One to two artists may be in residence at a time, working in either Studio Betty or Studio George.
This space is a ceramics studio especially equipped for low fire earthenware.
The children of George and Betty Woodman, Francesca and Charles, also lived there and spent every summer as teenagers in the Tuscan home. Francesca received her first camera as a gift from George while there, and many of her most well-known artworks were created in Italy. Both she and Charles are artists whose vision was strongly shaped by the time they spent in Italy.
Our Setting
Located in the Tuscan hills, the home includes sweeping views of the countryside. Inside, there are two fully equipped studios, and each artist has a comfortable private bedroom and bath. The shared kitchen and dining room give artists the space to connect and take in the views.
For those who want to absorb Italian culture, we’re only 25 minutes from downtown Florence.
Our Process
Resident artists are proposed by a rotating cast of nominators and then evaluated in a jury process. If selected, artists can visit for up to three months, to be scheduled sometime during the following three years.
