Meet our residency artists
The residency supports the practice of mid-career and established artists from diverse disciplines, cultures and backgrounds. Resident artists are proposed by a rotating cast of nominators and then evaluated in a jury process. If selected, artists can visit for up to three months, to be scheduled sometime during the following three years.
Upcoming Artists
We are pleased to announce that our first group of artists have been chosen. A panel of jurors met in 2024 and selected from scores of nominees the following 12 artists for upcoming residencies starting in April 2025. Please check back here in Spring 2025 to learn more about this group of talented artists.
Alumni artists
Special thanks to the pilot artists from 2023-2024 who helped inform and design the residency experience.

“Our time at the Woodman Artist Residency in the hills above Antella was like a dream come true. It was an inspiring location for me to create new music in the converted farm house of two very influential creative artists. The location is drop-dead beautiful, and the surrounding environment so conducive to digging deep into creative projects. As a composer I was provided with a spacious studio equipped with two brand-new state-of-the-art monitor speakers and a small mixer with cabling to connect to my laptop. The studio room has a high ceiling, is resonant but not boomy, and was perfect for auditioning the music I was making either intimately or at a distance. The large picture windows provide inspiration overlooking the Tuscan Hills. We enjoyed driving down the scenic road to Antella for shopping and catching the bus into Florence. Though we don't speak Italian we enjoyed interacting with the very friendly people in town who helped us acquiring the great Italian produce and wine for preparing our meals in the house. The two local artists Maria and Lorenzo who spoke good English were a delight to work with in orienting us to the area and use of the facilities. The property's wonderful gardener Ricardo brought us the lettuce and herbs he grew there every day. In short, it was a memorable productive time in a magical place."

“Living and working at the Woodman Residency was unforgettable. How can I describe what it's like to live in a landscape painting with a home, studio and grounds graced by Betty Woodman's ceramic sculpture and paintings by George Woodman. The ceramics studio is beautiful, big, ready for use with tables, clay, glazes and tools used and developed by Betty. The environment, plants, birds, gardens, olive trees, historic setting outside of Florence and evidence of this family of artists creates a unique and inspired atmosphere to develop new work in. Maria is so organized and helped set us up in the residency and navigate the area. Lorenzo got everything ready and was so helpful in making the studio work for my own process. They are both artists and so the discussions and exchange was one of my favorite parts of our time there. They introduced us to local curators and artists - it's always good to be in another country not just as a tourist but with the time and connections cultivated by a shared life in the arts. And then there is the cuckoo at sunset and the olive oil from the surrounding trees, the delicious food and friendly people.”

Immersed in the inspiring landscape of the Woodman residency, I plan to further my research and writing on art, museums, sustainability, and climate change. Indigenous and contemporary artists have been out front in addressing climate change, often through collaborations with museums, communities, scientists, and activists. Indigenous artists reassert traditional knowledge, recognizing the rights of nature, the need for harmony with the land, and the importance of other species. Artists utilize various modalities and approaches, whether their work represents and witnesses, embodies and imagines, inspires change, and creates space for transformations.

As an artist in residence, I will explore the interconnectedness not only between human cultures tied thorough time and geography but include cultures of the extra-human natural world. This residency is a time to expand my understanding of the physical properties of clay and to re-connect the material to the broader natural world through focusing on a body of work that speaks to clay’s history as a material that is shaped by our planet, has shaped human culture, and serves as a vector for understanding human communities.
