Application process

Resident artists are proposed by a rotating cast of nominators and then evaluated in a jury process. If selected, artists can visit for up to three months, to be scheduled sometime during the following three years.

FAQ

How much does the residency cost?

During the course of the residency, residents are responsible for living expenses such as food, travel to and from the residency, health and travel insurance, production expenses such as art materials and supplies, and shipping. Additional details will be provided upon acceptance to the program.

The residency program provides housing and workspace.

Is there a minimum length of stay?

Each resident is invited to stay for a period of up to three months.

Is there anything required of artists in residence?

This program is in partnership with the Siena Art Institute, where Residents will be Visiting Artists for a day.

Residents will also participate in an Open Studio for one day at the Residency, and may have an opportunity to exhibit their work in the nearby city of Florence.

Resident artists are responsible for shipping away their work at the end of their residency. No Artworks should be left on site.

How many artists will be on-site?

One to two artists may be on site at a given time.

Are the facilities shared?

Each resident will have their own studio, bedroom and bath, but other facilities such as kitchen, dining, and living areas will be shared between the artists in residence.

Who is responsible for the care of the facilities?

The Woodman Artist Residency asks that artists care for their own workspace, and return it to its original condition at the end of their residency. Housekeeping will be provided every other week to change the linens, wash the floors, etc. Daily housekeeping will be the responsibility of residents.

What kind of facilities does Woodman Artist Residency have?

The home is situated in rural Tuscany and surrounded by beautiful vistas. Upon arrival, the residency host will help orient new artists to the home and surrounding area. The house consists of two separate studios, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are communal spaces.

Studio Betty is a ceramics studio and is especially equipped for low fire earthenware including a kiln and a wheel. Studio George is a more general space suitable for a range of media.

An artist/technician is available to operate or teach the residents how to operate the facilities in Studio Betty and to assist both artists in finding necessary supplies and provide other art-related support.

How are artists selected?

Artists are nominated by a changing group of nominators. From these nominations, potential residents will be invited to apply. Their proposals will be reviewed by a jury who will decide who to invite to the residency.

Artists will be welcome to apply as individuals, as pairs of artists, or as couples. Once artists are invited, they will work with staff to identify a period that will work for them to visit within the next three years.

Can I bring a partner?

Residents may come by themselves or with a partner, who may or may not also be an artist. One small child may also be accommodated.

Do I purchase my own flight/travel to and from the residency?

Residents must make their own travel arrangements and reservations.

Are meals provided?

No, residents are responsible for their own cooking and groceries.

Should I bring anything? Can I buy what I need in Italy?

Studio Betty is equipped with clay, transparent glaze, slips and a kiln suitable for creating low fire earthenware. Other ceramic materials may be available in the studio, or can be purchased locally.

Studio George is equipped with tables and an easel. Residents working in Studio George are responsible for providing other materials as needed.

An artist/technician will be available on-site to help find necessary supplies and provide other art-related support to residents.

Can I ship to/from the residency?

Yes, but residents are responsible for their own shipping.
