Announcing the Launch of the Woodman Artist Residency
October 2024
A restorative and inspiring refuge for creative practitioners of all disciplines

Florence, Italy – We are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the Woodman Artist Residency opening in October, 2024, a program designed to support the practice of artists from all disciplines and all parts of the world. The residency is set in the studios and farmhouse that artists Betty and George Woodman lovingly refurbished, overlooking the city of Florence. The residency program nurtures and supports working artists by offering time and space in the comfortable and exquisite surroundings that for fifty years nourished the remarkable artistic output of Betty, George, Francesca and Charles Woodman. The Artist Residency extends the legacy of this family of eminent artists by providing an unparalleled opportunity for creative practitioners to live and work in Tuscany, Italy.

The Woodman Artist Residency is dedicated to fostering creativity and artistic growth. Betty’s fully functioning low-fire ceramic studio and George’s workspace for 2-D artists, photographers, musicians, filmmakers or writers provide ideal conditions for creative explorations. These comfortable facilities provide the perfect setting for working artists. A residency, for up to three months, is available to mid-career or established artists of all disciplines through a nomination and jury selection process.

“By inviting artists into the Antella house, we can share the inspiration and gift of Betty and George’s home and studios, ideal for creative contemplation and exploration” explains Charles Woodman, founder and board president of the Woodman Residency Foundation.

“In this way the legacy of my parents and sister will live on through the eyes and hands of scores of creative makers who will be picked up and carried forward in the setting and spaces my parents created.”

“This is a glorious place, designed and assembled by artists for artists; a precious gift of context and time for focused work and internal exploration,” said Gordon Knox, director of the program. “After a lifetime of building and crafting artist residencies world-wide, I can say that the space and atmosphere Betty and George established here is simply the most perfect setting for artistic renewal. This is a gift that will keep on giving; generations of artists will make work here that in turn will advance human understanding.”

2022-2023 were the pilot years for the Woodman Artist Residency.
